2017 brings the vinous components of this vibrant wine to an epic ‘One Hundred and Eight Varieties’ aka the 2017 Red Rosé saga. “But Dave,” I hear you say “…that’s just too INSANE TO BE TRUE!!!” Well, dear potential drinker, what you (with a simple click) hold in your hand is proof irrefutable that ‘au contraire’, it is not only possible but absolutely delicious as well!
53% of the Blend from our Stonewell Hill and Stelzer Road Blocks
38% of the Blend from Kevin Bartch’s Nursery Block
Langmeil Road Tanunda
9% of the Blend from James Lindner’s Seppelstfield Road Block
Brilliant Pale Raspberry with seductive pink notes about the meniscus
Perfectly ripe raspberries and toffee apples soar gracefully over a potpourri of fragrant rose petal , Turkish delight with a cheeky hint of yeasty autolysis and harmonious oak peeking out underneath
Emulating a perfect raspberry and red current crush with lovely tight acidity leading through a generous fruit driven body finishing with a long lingering smear of lime and butterscotch sorbet. The rich floral characters of the Aromatic Varieties give an implied middle palate sweetness that is fully cleansed by the slightly sweet but crisp finish. Best when lightly chilled.
2017 brings the vinous components of this vibrant wine to an epic ‘One Hundred and Eight Varieties’ aka the 2017 Red Rosé saga. Opportunity (and paying last year‘s fruit bill) have again come together on ‘Mt Lehmo’ to fill barrel and tank alike with a veritable plethora of delicious different grapey goodness bits. Yep for the fourth year running I’ve made a wine from more than one hundred different varieties. “But Dave,” I hear you say “...that’s just too INSANE TO BE TRUE!!!” Well, dear sceptical drinker, what you hold in your hand is proof irrefutable that ‘au contraire’, it is not only possible but absolutely delicious as well!
All fruit for the 2017 Red Rose was handpicked. The first picks for the Red Rose was a 320kg selection of the early ripening varieties on Kevin Bartsch’s Nursery Block in mid-January. This was followed in mid February with the second picking of Kevin Bartsch’s Nursery Block supplying a further 2.5 tonnes of fruit salad goodness. Black Muscat from James Lindner’s Seppelstfield Road Block supplied 870kgs on the same days we picked the backbone of the 2017 Red Rose - the 1923 Planted ‘Red Rose Block’. This supplied 3.1tonne of mixed varietals which were supplemented with a mixed 800kg of White Fronti and Crouchen from the boundary fence of the Stonewell Block and 750kg of Riesling from our Stelzer Road Block in mid March. The third and final 575kg pick of the late ripening varieties from Kevin Bartsch’s Nursery block finished the blend in late March. As each batch of grapes came in they were Destemmed to Open Fermenters and Chilled on skins to 5 Degrees C and allowed up to 5 days skin contact. After Basket Pressing free run and Pressings were combined were sequentially filled to barrel and allowed to cold ferment on full lees to dry over generally a 5-6-week period. After the addition of SO2 the barrels spent a total of 12 month on lees before being racked together and bottled in March 2018. Released in January 2019
Defining its own category, the 2017 Rosé is where my artisanal soul and experimental curiosity come together in the bottle. This veritable cornucopia of varieties creates a layered and textural rosé that is a tour de force of aromatics and textured nuance bursting with drinkability and flavour! Cheers and Enjoy!
