2016 Benjamin's Promise Shiraz

Shiraz has gone from being a workhorse backbone to many fortifieds in years gone by, to being one of the great success stories of the modern wine making era. Perhaps nowhere as consistently as in the Barossa. Although some muttering can be heard that this star has peaked and that perhaps the gloss is wearing a little thin... I have to say I completely disagree! Barossa Shiraz has now (just this minute) entered it’s “interesting” stage and now more than ever before Barossa Shiraz has something Delicious to say to your mouth!

Brooding deep rich red, bright rim

Black Cherry interwoven with chary oak and red summer fruits. Undertones of Yeasty Complexity and the signature ‘Benjamin’s’ Violet lift give a rich and inviting aroma.

Bright intense Ripe plums and red summer berries interplay with Cherry ‘pinginess’. Chary yeasty richness overlaid with red strap licorice, milk chocolate, some earthiness and leather. The fine elegant tannins and well balanced Oak structure underpin a long lingering fruit driven finish.

31st of March 2021, I’m in the middle of potentially the best Shiraz vintage of the decade and we’ve run out of the previous release of Benjamin’s Promise… Bloody hell! I’m as busy as a one-armed brick layer in Baghdad, up to my elbows in grapes, and Easter’s in a couple of days. Luckily (as they say) busy people get heaps done and while it is a bit of a ‘No Shit’ self-evident truism, the fact you’re reading this label means that I have met the challenge. I’m really feeling the 2021 vibe - the sun is shining; the grapes are bursting with goodness and it’s such a positive time - perfect to smash out the words for this label. Ben’s still at Uni, working his way through his degree in Media which (like many) turned into a bit of a COVIDCULUSTERFUCK last year. I cannot judge him harshly though; so many lost their way in 2020 – the important thing is he’s now picking up the pieces and forging on. On a personal level, the not so little bastard has had the temerity over the past 12 months to overtake his old man in height! Apart from his ability to grow taller, he’s also managed to push out a damn fine-looking beard. So fine in fact, it’s inspired me to have a crack as well. The result: let’s just say in this race, the old man is not nervous yet. With his busy life down in the ‘Big Smoke’ amongst the shining lights and excitement of Adelaide, we don’t see him as often as we like… but as always, a good home cooked meal from the old man can still get him and his huge appetite home, enjoyed these days with a glass of himself, of course!

The 2016 Benjamin’s Promise Shiraz was forged in a hallmark Shiraz year. The early ripening saw us picking in late February and early March, which saw us going like demons to get all the black gold in basically at the same time. We picked all our Shiraz over a seven-day period from the 25th of February to the 4th of March. The glorious black gems were given the ‘rummage of love’ in 30 odd different small batch parcels , the best of which were gathered to make this wine. As always, the fruit was taken from Sand, Loam and Clay across our Stone Well Hill Bultawilta and Stelzer Road Vineyards. Each small batch of Shiraz was hand plunged 3 times daily and spent 24 days on skins. This extended skin contact is the secret to velvety tannins and the intense fruit drive that are the hallmark of the Benjamin’s Promise Shiraz. The ‘unstoppable’ but gentle Hypac basket press extracted every last drop of black gold from the skins which was then filled to new and seasoned French Oak Hogsheads on full lees for 25 months ageing before being racked to tank to settle. After final blending, 3300 bottles were filled (unfiltered) of the 2016 Benjamin's Promise Shiraz in January 2019. Each bottle ( as always ) has been hand printed wrapped and packaged with care by the team at david Franz before wending its way to you

Cheers and Enjoy
