When it comes to varietals and wine, deep down inside I reckon each one of us has a favorite; Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon is undoubtedly mine. It is as unique and distinctive as the more famous Shiraz, But for me, there is so much more going on. The flavour spectrum encompasses an absolute treasure box of liquorice, red and black summer berries, anise fennel spice box and chocolate. In my (biased) opinion, few things can match the poise of full flight Barossa Cabernet...

Rich and deep red with a brooding dark core
Great Barossa Cabernet varietals - Piercing red berry and black currant over dark chocolate, liquorice savory leather and cedar notes. Plenty of fragrant dark fruits.
Vibrant cassis and savory strap liquorice. Rich mid palate with gentle warmth and fine elegant tannins. Great length with a slathering of rich lingering chocolate flavours coating the mouth
There comes a moment when as a parent you suddenly realise that your ‘kid’ is a child no more. Georgie turned twenty-one four month ago (as write this in early November 2019) and she’s just getting on with life. She’s moved out, got a flat with her boyfriend and getting her teeth well and truly sunk into her second year of study at ICHM. Sitting here typing, I’ve had that quiet moment of contemplation to say, yep, Nicki and I have done pretty good. Georgie and Turner (her BF) tick all the right boxes – They’re house proud, they cook every night of the week – both are skilled with a skillet – and it’s rare that the bank of Mum (and Dad) gets tapped for extras at all. There is a sense of wistfulness that accompanies this sort of rumination. Visions of Georgie as a 5 year old discovering life, as a 9 year old chasing dreams of dance and as a 14 year old striking bravely out on her own… but, the past is immutable and in some ways those memories means that those versions of that girl will always exist. Luckily, the beautiful ‘Growned-up’ Georgie is the one I actually like the best!
While ‘Cab Sauv’ is far from synonymous with the Barossa, it’s the dark horse the initiated value above all else - yours truly included. 2014 was a ‘hallmark’ Barossa vintage. A bit like the opening lines of ‘Summertime’, the living was easy. Happy vines make happy wines and in 2014 our three home Cabernet Sauvignon blocks; House on the Hill, Horse Paddock and Bultawilta , were bloody ecstatic! The 2014 Georgie’s Walk started its journey to your glass in late March / early April with all three blocks coming off within 7 days of each other. In what I’d call ‘properly timed vintage, the Cabernet was chock full of everything we wanted and plenty more! The 2014 Georgie’s Walk was handmade in 11 small open ferments ranging in size from 470Kg to 770Kg. Each batch was hand plunged three times a day during ferment before being basket pressed after a total of 40 days on skins. The wine was then filled with full lees to a mix of new and seasoned American oak for 26 months maturation. After final blending, 1700 bottles of the 2014 Georgie’s Walk Cabernet Sauvignon were bottled. In 2024 576 bottles have been re-released of the Cellar Release 2014 Georgie’s Walk Cabernet Sauvignon. Team david Franz have as always finished the bottle with the hand printed love we would never let it leave home without.
