2018 brings the vinous components of this vibrant wine to an epic ‘One Hundred and Eight Varieties’ aka the 2018 Red Rosé saga. “But Dave,” I hear you say “…that’s just too INSANE TO BE TRUE!!!” Well, dear potential drinker, what you (with a simple click) hold in your hand is proof irrefutable that ‘au contraire’, it is not only possible but absolutely delicious as well!
53% of the Blend from our Stonewell Hill and Stelzer Road Blocks
38% of the Blend from Kevin Bartsch’s Nursery Block
Langmeil Road Tanunda
9% of the Blend from James Lindner’s Seppelstfield Road Block
Perfectly Raspberry with seductive salmon notes about the meniscus
Delicious ripe raspberries and toffee apples soar gracefully over a potpourri of fragrant rose petal , Turkish delight with a cheeky hint of yeasty autolysis and harmonious oak peeking out underneath
Emulating a perfect raspberry and red current crush with lovely tight acidity leading through a generous fruit driven body finishing with a long lingering smear of lime and butterscotch sorbet. The rich floral characters of the Aromatic Varieties give an implied middle palate sweetness that is fully cleansed by the slightly sweet but crisp finish. Best when lightly chilled.
With the release of the 2018 Red Rosé, the coming together of vinous components creating the epic ‘One Hundred and Eight Varieties’ will draw to a close once the last bottle is drunk. “Nooooo!!! I hear you cry... that’s just too SAD TO BE TRUE!!!” Unfortunately the 2019 and 2020 vintage were so low yielding that many of the vines in Bartchy’s Nursery block failed to deliver their usual cornucopian bounty. After 2018, we cannot in good faith continue the series! Savour this fifth and FINAL One Hundred Plus Varietal Tour De Force before the last bottle rings the bell and the legend of ‘108 varieties’ retreats into the mists of time forever. So, for the uninitiated… Yep! for the fifth year running I’ve made a wine from more than one hundred different varieties. “But Dave,” I hear you say, that seems not only unlikely, but perhaps untrue! Well, dear sceptical drinker, what you hold in your hand is proof irrefutable that ‘au contraire’, it is not only possible but absolutely Magnificent as well!
2018 was a year for balanced, rich delicious wines. Kicking this awesome blend off in Late January, the first ‘early pick’ of 300kgs from Kevin Bartsch’s Langmeil Road Nursery Block rolled in. Four weeks later, in what can only be described as the Central ‘Pièce de résistance’, the next four picks (two and a half vari-coloured tonnes) were delivered over a five day period from his enviable library of 105 mixed wine and table grape varieties. Three(ish) weeks later, our Stonewell Hill block supplied three or so tonnes of fruit from the old patch of 1923 planted mixed varietals. Joining the Rosé mix was half a tonne of old school Crouchen and three hundred and fifty kilos of White Frontignac. Next, eight hundred kilos of Barossa Black Muscat from Jimmy Lindner and seven hundred plus change kilos of Riesling grown by me on my Stelzer Road block and finally, a week later to last half tonne of Bartchy’s Late Fruit to round out the blend.
Defining its own category, the 2018 Rosé is definitely where my artisanal soul and experimental curiosity come together in the bottle. This veritable cornucopia of varieties creates a layered and textural rosé that is a tour de force of aromatics and textured nuance bursting with drinkability and flavour! Cheers and Enjoy!
