There is so much more to Barossa Shiraz than the big jammy fruit bombs that seem to grab the high profile attention. Don’t get me wrong, these wines definitely have their place in the ‘book of shiraz’ it’s just that they are a chapter, rather than the whole story.

Philosophy:

It’s mid February 2017 and in a stolen morning as I wait for the delayed vintage to finally get going I sit and write this label. Ben turned sixteen in December last year. Crikey! I can’t believe how time has flown by. He’s just started year eleven at high school and going through growth spurts like nothing else. His voice is quite funny... deep then squeaky then raspy... ahh puberty - sucks to go through it yourself but endlessly entertaining for the rest of the family! Ben had a bad concussion in August last year that has to date stopped him from bouncing. It’s been bloody tough, I know as he finally made selection for the Australia Squad and was due to represent Australia in New Zealand in September. Ahh well, such is life. Concussion - if I can just make one observation - is a much more complex issue that I realised. But beyond this sport that has so consumed our son, a whole ‘other’ life of school friends and family is keeping him plenty busy indeed. I look forward to the hormones settling down but for now am content that Ben’s tracking along as best as can be.

2012 has shaped up terrifically. Following on from the ‘big wet’ of the previous year, cleansed soils and a stress free growing season brought forth fruit of great purity and depth.
The 2012 Benjamin's Promise Shiraz was created from 26 different small batch parcels taken from Sand, Loam and Clay across our Stone Well Hill and Stelzer Road Vineyards. Each small batch of Shiraz was hand plunged 3 times daily and spent between 26 to 32 days on skins. This extended skin contact is the secret to velvety tannins and the intense fruit drive that are the hallmark of the Benjamin’s Promise Shiraz. The ‘unstoppable’ but gentle Hypac basket press extracted every last drop of black gold from the skins which was then filled to new and aged French Oak Hogsheads on full lees for 2 years ageing before being racked to tank cleaned up and finished in small oak for another 6 months..
In 2022, 384 bottles have been re-released of the the Cellar Release 2012 Benjamin's Promise Shiraz. Each bottle ( as always ) has been hand printed wrapped and packaged with care by the team at david Franz before wending its way to you. Enjoy and Cheers!
