When it comes to varietals and wine, deep down inside I reckon each one of us has a favorite; Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon is undoubtedly mine. It is as unique and distinctive as the more famous Shiraz, but for me, there is so much more going on. The flavour spectrum encompasses an absolute treasure box of licorice, red and black summer berries, anise fennel spice box and chocolate. In my (biased) opinion, few things can match the poise of full flight Barossa Cabernet...
26 small open ferments ranging in size from 580Kg to 650Kg from our ‘Home Blocks - House on the Hill, Horse Paddock and Bultawilta
Total production 3300 bottles
Rich and deep red with a brooding dark core
Great Barossa Cabernet varietals- Piercing red berry and black currant over dark chocolate, licorice savory leather and cedar notes. Plenty of fragrant dark fruits.
Vibrant cassis and savory strap liquorice. Rich mid palate with gentle warmth and fine elegant tannins. Great length with a slathering of rich lingering chocolate flavours coating the mouth
A bright sunny day on the 7th of January 2025; as we reconcile ourselves to being back to work Post-Christmas & New Years break. We’ve just come off one of the dryest years on record here in the Barossa with 2024 recording the sort of rainfall you’d normally see above the Goyder Line somewhere in the norther Eye Peninsula. Verasion is well underway, I noticed the first berries starting to colour up just after Christmas, so all indications are for an early and pretty compact vintage. Georgie and her Husband Turner have been married for over a year now and have got the first offering for the next generation cooking away in Georgie’s tummy. I’m going to be a Pop in June 2025… Whoo Hoo! I hope their first born isn’t quite the Hell Raiser that its Parents were… by all accounts Turner was just as precocious of a shit as Georgie was. “Why?” I hear you ask in my head, “surely the cosmic Karma should come home to roost!” Nah, I want them to have a cruisy entry into the word of parenthood, so hopefully they’ll have another few cracks at least. Anyway, that’s another six or so months away as I write – plenty to do between now and then. I am so proud of the way Georgie has not only stepped up into her role here at david Franz, but also the deft had she has shown in conceiving, crafting and polishing her own Gegika Wines as well. She’s had such a strong vision of the style and vibe of the wines she has wanted to make and 5 years down the track from her first Gegika vintage she has been proved 100% on the money every time they hit the glass. And in my book, it’s the glass that ultimately has the final vote! We sell the Gegika wines through the Cellardoor and online (Go get yerself a bottle or six) and the feedback from those who try is enough to make her old man’s chest swell with pride. So, the next six months are going to be pretty monumental for my favourite daughter… but without a doubt the most exciting as well!
Anyone who has heard what I’ve espoused over the last 26 years of winemaking, knows that Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon is my nirvana. Whilst not always what the purists hold up as their holy grail, I’d invariably choose the Barossa iteration against the best the rest of the world offers up with a firm hand and clear eye. 2018 was a cracking year for red varieties in the Barossa. Following on from the cool wetter conditions of the previous year, soils were refreshed, bud burst and flowering even and the growing season so good you’d think we’d ordered it direct from the catalogue. In 2018, the ‘Horse Paddock’ Cabernet Block is once again the central driver behind the Georgie’s Walk, with our House on the Hill and Bultawilta blocks playing supporting roles. The fruit started its journey to your glass on the 6th and 13th of April 2018 chock full of freshness, plenty of natural acidity and rocked wonderfully silky tannins. The 2018 Georgie’s Walk was handmade in 26 small open ferments ranging in size from 580Kg to 650Kg. Each batch was hand plunged three times a day during ferment before being basket pressed after just over 60 days on skins. The wine was then filled with full lees to a mix of new and seasoned oak for 36 months maturation. After final blending, 3300 bottles of the 2018 Georgie’s Walk Cabernet Sauvignon were bottled in Mid November 2021 and released in January 2025 just shy of its 7th Birthday. Team david Franz have, as always, finished the bottle with the hand printed love we would never let it leave home without. Enjoy and Cheers!
