2024 Eden Valley Arneis & Neldner Vine Vale Madiera Clone Semillon; The concept was using the Semillon to add a firm structure to the generous richness of the Arneis, to create the perfect seafood wine. We (Ben and I) didn’t really have a particular goal in mind but instead harnessed the fruit and the direction the wine was heading.
in 2024, my brother Ben and I decided to make a wine together. Well, it didn’t really happen like that… in 2024 my brother Ben decided to make a wine. he was doing vintage in the vineyards, harvesting and picking with Nick, the vineyard manager. his favourite white varietal is Arneis, so naturally when there was some excess Arneis banging around, he didn’t hesitate to grab it as his own. as I was predominately working on the cellar floor it became my duty to look after his little baby. Well as most commitments go during vintage, the Arneis fell to the back of the priority list for Ben. Who cares what’s happening in a barrel after all-nighters sitting on the tractor! I happily stepped in and claimed the wine as my own; sibling’s rights! 'Pearl of my Eye' is an ode to my family; how lucky am I to be able to do what I love surrounded by those closest to me. I have worked and collaborated along side with my parents, two brothers and my husband over my career, how cool to learn and grow with the people that we know the best.
2024 pearl of my eye is a 60% Bartholomaeus Eden Valley Arneis & 30% Neldner Vine Vale Madiera Clone Semillon. The fruit was crush / destemmed then tipped straight into the basket press. Free run and pressings were transferred into a seasoned french oak hogshead where it completed its primary fermentation. Ample time on gross lees and batonnage has delivered a creamy white with ample texture. This pearl of beauty embodies its namesake, crisp silky and precious. Each bottle has had lots of love, care and consideration poured into it, enjoy every drop!
The label came about because all I could think about when I was drinking this wine was seafood
Pale straw
The opening salvo is pub lemonade shandy when you’re young leading to salty ocean breeze, green olives & oyster shells after a good feed with a hint of Yuzu Flesh.
Ripe fuse oils of Amalfi lemon peel with a rich old school grapefruit fleshiness fills the palate. A delicious sense of salt rimmed cocktail glass anticipating tropical sunset with an appropriate cooling sea breeze. Crisp yet complex, fat yet refined.
